Avocados are native to Mexico and grow on trees in warmer climates. They are available all year round in WA, with the main commercial season running from August to February.
There are over 50 varieties of avocados. The 3 main types include Mexican, Guatemalan and West Indian. With the two most common varieties found around the world, the Hass and Fuerte.
77 000 tones of Avocado were produced for 2017-18 in WA. Now that is a-lot-o-avo!
According to statistics, Western Australia contributes to 25% of the Australian production of avocados, with 50-80% of its production sold interstate and overseas. These are mainly the Hass variety.
Some of the areas in Western Australia where Avocados are being produced include Gingin, Busselton and Pemberton.
How to eat avocados
When it comes to the avocado its best to keep it simple. Sprinkle some salt, pepper, add a dash of lemon juice or olive oil. Add some toasted seeds for a little crunch.
Spreading avocado on toast, wraps, bagels or burgers is a much healthier alternate to butter. For breakfast try cut them and stuff them with a poached egg and finely diced bacon.
Avocados go great with quinoa or combined with fresh salmon, feta and tomato. Adding them to a healthy salad will help keep you fuller for longer.
You can make everyone’s favourite guacamole, or an avocado spread with garlic or mayo. Create an avocado smoothie with banana, blueberries and a hint of vanilla.
